Saturday, Feb 21
All seeds packed for 2008, so not expecting great germination. All started in cells.

  • Broccoli — Early Dividend — 28
  • Carrots — Mokum Hybrid — 28 (Same theory here as with the beets.)

Sunday, Feb 22
Planted approx 10 feet of Oregon Trail shelling peas in a raised bed; covered with windows leaning up on the side of the raised bed for a cheapo cold frame. Planted a handful or two of Sugar Snap peas in a former potato bucket, not covered.

Tuesday, March 3
Planted radish starts in a raised bed. Chickens promptly ate them. Radishes from starts experiment, take 1: results inconclusive.

Saturday, March 7
Started seven cells each of Sweet Basil, Genvoese Basil, cilantro, dill, oregano, and white winter bunching scallions. Planted three rhubarb roots.

Wednesday, March 18
Planted out, under hoophouses, several of the February 21st Umpqua, Early Dividend, and Purple Sprouting broccoli; chard; Mokum hybrid carrots; arugula; Simpson, pompom, and flashy trout’s back lettuce; Red Russian and lacinato kale; and mixed mustard greens. In two new terraces on a small hillside, we put one row of leeks along the front edge of each, using up all of the Feb 21 leeks, and some broccolis and lettuces behind the leeks. These are under Agri-bon. Didn’t harden anything off so I overplanted, expecting several things to die.

Saturday, March 21
Potted up the anchos and pepperoncini started on Feb 21st — they were in ~1.5 inch cells (38 cells per tray) and I moved them up to 4-inch plastic pots. Also I put, under hoophouses, the beets that germinated in trays, since they were starting to get very spindly and wanted to go in the ground.

Started in the rest of the 38-cell tray:

  • Broccoli — Belstar — 8
  • Artichoke — Violetto — 8
  • Cabbage — Ruby Bell — 3
  • Cabbage — Gonzales — 4

Started in 98-cell trays, 7 each of the following tomatoes:

  • Gill’s All-Purpose
  • Black
  • Silvery Fir Tree
  • Cherokee Purple
  • Purple Calabash
  • Brandywine
  • Persimmon
  • Super San Marzano
  • Oregon Cherry
  • Sweet Pea
  • Mortgage Lifter
  • Yellow Pear
  • Pineapple
  • Striped Roman
  • San Marzano
  • Seattle’s Best of All
  • Japanese Black Trifele

Note that I forgot Green Zebra, one of our most favorite flavors. Will be putting them in tomorrow.

Also started:

  • Peppers — SeƱorita — 7
  • Peppers — Peguis — 7
  • Peppers — Cayenne — 7
  • Peppers — Alma Paprika — 7
  • Celery — Red Giant — 7
  • Parsley — whatever flat-leafed — 14

Sunday, March 22

Filled an empty row on the tomato tray with 7 Green Zebra cells. Then I noticed that there’s a row on the first try that doesn’t have a flag. Maybe we’ll have 14 Green Zebras? That would be OK.

Sunday, March 29

Four seed trays moved out to the greenhouse today — ones with lots of brassicas, plus some lettuces, chard, and herbs. Started three new trays inside:

  • Leeks — Giant Musselburgh — 63
  • Parsnips — Gladiator — 35
  • Onions — Redwing (storage) — 98 (one whole tray)
  • Sunflowers — ?? — 7
  • Parsley — Italian flat leaf — 7
  • Basil — Genovese — 21
  • Mustard greens — Green Wave — 15
  • Brussels sprouts — Roodnerf — 14
  • Cabbage — Ruby Ball — 7
  • Cabbage — Gonzales hybrid — 7
  • Cabbage — Derby Day — 14
  • Artichokes — Imperial Star — 7
  • Tomatillo — Mexican Strain — 7

Several chards, kales, and lettuces from previous seed trays planted out under a hoophouse in the main garden. In the same hoophouse, Garth direct-sowed four rows of mixed radish seed, four rows of Olympia Hybrid spinach, three rows of Purple Haze carrots, four of Mokum carrots, and three of Red Samurai carrots. These will all be harvested by the time our main summer crop, whatever it may be, needs to go in there.
